Description

Sign up for this 6-week summer abroad program in North India, where you will look into the roots of Tibetan identity. Throughout your stay in the region, you will participate in various activities - from participating in a learning service project to tackling the effects of climate change in the Himalayas.

Our exploration starts in Ladakh, often called “Little Tibet”. Here, you will learn about the local culture through a learning service project. Listen to scholars, climate-scientists, and Buddhist philosophers as they discuss their traditions and the changing economic, ecological, and cultural patterns within North India.

You will then head to the remote Changthang Plateau, which symbolizes the end of several Tibetans’ pilgrimage and where nomads and herders live. Here, you will visit herding camps and volunteer at an environmental project. You will also also go on a challenging trek into Himachal Pradesh. Other than these, you will take part in numerous activities for the entire duration.

Highlights

1. Learn basic Ladakhi and Tibetan phrases through interactions with locals.

2. Take part in volunteering and learning service projects aimed at supporting local students and Tibetan refugees.

3. Go on rigorous, high-altitude treks to Dhauladhar Range and Ladakh.

4. Stay with families in Tibetan refugee camps and in a remote Ladakhi village.

5. Participate in an extensive discussion on Indo-Tibetan Buddhism and the role of religion in Ladakhi and Tibetan culture.
