Description

With 60 hours of classes per month and accommodation with a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practice what you've learned with your hosts each day.Lessons are with a tutor on a one on one basis and are tailored to your ability.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have been learning French for many years, being immersed in the language every day will help your skills progress quickly. After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore the area with other volunteers.

You can also choose to study French while participating in a volunteer placement. Our 14-hour or 30-hour French language courses can be done alongside your volunteer placement in Morocco, Senegal, or Togo to improve your language skills. If you are planning on volunteering abroad for three months or more, you could also complete a 60 hour course alongside your placement. For more information on these courses click here.

French is the main language of communication on a daily basis in Senegal, although for most Senegalese people in Saint Louis their mother tongue is the tribal language of Wolof. But to buy items in a shop, chat with your placement supervisor or joke with your host family you will need to speak some French.

If you are not confident in starting a placement before improving your French, a month long intensive language course is a sensible and worthwhile plan. We provide 60 hours of one on one classes with fully qualified French language teachers. During your first lesson your teacher will assess your ability, and from then on the classes will be tailored to your level.

Highlights

Most of the lessons take place at the French Cultural Centre, on Saint Louis Island. You will receive free membership to the library and gain free admission to concerts and film nights, which are regularly held at the center.

To supplement your studies you will live with a local host family, where you can put your new vocabulary into practice. Once you have completed a month's study, you could go on to spend some time on a Teaching, Care, or Sports project. If your French is good enough, you could also work on one of our Radio Journalism placements.
