Explore issues of politics, class, gender, race, ethnicity, and religion in East Africa through the Swahili Language and Culture program in Zanzibar. The islands of Zanzibar, which have been the crossroads of European, Indian, Arab, Persian, and African culture for nearly two millennia, offers a unique setting for exploration. Zanzibar also offers an ideal location for learning Swahili.

Students will take one course on the cultural and political history of Zanzibar and East Africa, and one Swahili language course.

The program examines the history of Zanzibar as a colonial expansion, slavery, the legacies of political centralization and social division left by colonial rule, international trade, and the ways the countrys experience interacts with and differs from the histories of Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, and other neighboring states.

1. Explore the culture of East Africa in an ideal location.

2. Learn Swahili, the most widely spoken African language, through an intensive language course in Zanzibar.

3. Enjoy excursions that complement the curriculum.

4. Visit Pemba Island, Dar es Salaam, one of the national parks in Tanzania, and conservation and cultural sites in mainland Tanzania and on the island of Zanzibar.

5. Experience unique coastlines and spice plantations.
